Discussion Items
Investment in Open report
The group reviewed and discussed some of the comments made by Brian Schoolar and CSST.
Annie will accept Brian’s comments.
Items not mentioned in report comments – We discussed the three examples CSST highlighted were not mentioned in the report: OA publications that are/are not included in Alma, the Textbook Affordability Project/general OER advocacy, and the student OA journal, Maneto. We discussed at length possible revisions to the organization of the report, such as including/removing sections, keeping in mind that the report is not intended to be exhaustive. We had general questions regarding what does and does not get added to the catalog, as well as who makes those decisions. We decided that we would include some content in the ‘Support for OA Collections’ section of the report, mentioning how SCCCT and CSSST could further explore how OA collections are added to Alma and the time investment associated with it. We also decided to include some additional content related to staffing investments.
Joint meetings comment – We thought it best to keep the phrasing broad in the report as things could change over time, and the teams could determine at point of need.
'Open' as a noun comment – We did not think there was a need to address or further explain this.
LTD philosophy/statement about open source software comment – Rachel will reach out to Chad Nelson and inquire if there is such a statement that we could mention.
Knowledge Unlatched comment – Some of the history behind this is unknown as it pre-dates a number of the individuals here. We decided to add some brief details about this.
Annie will make the revisions, share with team one more time, and then send on to library leadership.
Promoting OA Week 2018
Three public events are planned for OA Week:
Integrating Open Access Resources into your Canvas Course workshop – Tuesday, October 23 // 12:30 pm
Introduction to the Open Science Framework workshop – Wednesday, October 24 // 12:00 pm
Using Open Textbooks in the Classroom – Thursday, October 25 // 12:30 pm
Rebeca and Ariel from CAT have been collaborating for their 10/23 workshop. There are currently has seven people registered. CAT will help us promote the workshop.
Gretchen is working on marketing for the OSF event.
Annie is working to identify potential faculty attendees for the Using Open Textbooks in the Classroom workshop; she is working with the BSSE team. There was some discussion about potential faculty in AHM liaison areas we could target (e.g. Economics? Religion? Philosophy?). CAT will be unable to help us promote this workshop.
Annie and Rebecca are working on creating the posters for the faculty exhibit. They will print the posters next week and plan to have them up on Friday, 10/19. Kristina will also assist with hanging the posters.
Annie forwarded an OA Week mailchimp template to the team, encouraging us to send messaging on to others.
The team is all set for the OpenCon NYC event on Friday, 10/26.
Institutional Repository update
The reimagined repository group met for first time last week.
The group's charge was finalized and sent to invested partners.
The SCSST team does have access to the charge in the Google IR team drive.
The repository group has formed a metadata subgroup, and additional people from outside the repository group have been included.
Annie recently had a positive conversation with Joe concerning staffing needs for the IR. Joe recognizes the need for a full-time position focused on the IR. Annie will be working with Richie Holland to begin crafting a position description.
General
Annie and Steven are attending Open Education Conference in Niagara Falls later in the week.
