Duplicate NARs

When identified, duplicate NARs should be reported for deletion to NACO through the following workflow:

1. Decide which NAR should be retained.

2. Consolidate the information from both records onto the NAR to be kept. This may include 670s with additional data or other fields not present in the record to be retained. (For examples, please see the relevant NACO training slides attached below) Additional updates to the retained record can be made at this time as well (upgrade to RDA, additional fields, etc.)

3. Add the updated record to the NACO JIRA board as usual.

4. After the updated record had been submitted to the NAF, email NACO@loc.gov to have them delete the duplicate record. Sample email:

3. Duplicate name heading reporting

OCLC also sends to LC an error report identifying duplicate headings in the authority database, allowing LC staff to resolve conflicts and to maintain affected bibliographic records. As of result, exact duplicates do not need to be reported to LC. However, logical duplicates for the same entity that use different 1XX forms do still need to be reported to LC.
