This week marks an exciting transition point in the DSpace project- while the work up until this point has focused on back-end configuration of DSpace and Elements (work that continues to roll along) we’re at the point where it’s time to start thinking about our IR as a public-facing system. Now that the functional kernel of the system is in place, it’s time to configure it in line with our scholarly community’s needs.
Annie Johnson (Unlicensed) will lead the charge on this through a DSpace ‘strategic partners’ group that she will convene. Previously Annie, through the ScholCom team, convened a series of calls with the managers of well-established Institutional Repositories at Duke, Cornell, UT Austin, and UMinn. What we learned from these conversations informed both the back-end and front-end work we’ve done heretofore. The new strategic partners group will help to translate what we learned through these conversations to the work at hand, and will tackle more practical tasks integral to our IR’s implementation. For example this group will decide how to configure the Elements ‘deposit to DSpace’ interface, and how to word the copyright advisory text that will be provided to researchers. It will also advise on the policies surrounding the IR and the ETDs, allowing the DSpace project team to make sure the system and the metadata it contains is structured so as to accommodate these policies.
Update on back-end work:
- The Deposit process is up and running in the development environment.
- Gabe Galson will continue his crosswalk testing and customization work, consulting with Holly as necessary.
- Holly Tomren will handle metadata mapping work, bringing in MADS staff as needed and consulting with Gabe as necessary.
- Gabe will continue working on integrating a DOI generation workflow into DSpace, migrating ETDs into DSpace, and creating a direct submission form.
