Strategic Actions, Goals and Accomplishments

Designing and building a dramatically new library environment to serve as a catalyst for academic enterprise at Temple.

At the heart of the Temple campus, this new central library will embody emerging modes of library mission while sustaining and transforming traditional library functions and commitments, with a quality and thoughtfulness of design that will be a model for other research universities nationally and internationally in the digital age.

*Indicates New Goals FY19-20

Access & Media Services

  • Streamlining of workflows centered around providing services.
  • Developing and documenting standard operating procedures for the ASRS and maintenance duties.

Acquisitions & Collection Development

  • Participate as a department and as a part of the Physical Collections Working Group in the planning and execution of the move to Charles Library.

External Affairs & Advancement*

  • Planning alumni and individual donor cultivation initiatives in the new Charles to support the endowment.
  • Strategies for raising endowment funds for the new building will include face-to-face meetings with key donors and prospects and utilizing the new library case statement to showcase the building via its renderings, and a schedule of naming opportunities to support it.
  • Additional FY ’20 priorities include working diligently with the Office of Institutional Advancement and others, including the Libraries’ BOV, to identify, cultivate, and solicit major donors to provide naming gifts for the new library. This will enable the Libraries to have dedicated sources of endowment income to operate this new facility.

Learning & Research Services - Arts, Humanities & Media

Identify ways AHM liaisons can engage their departments to help faculty and students transition to Charles Library and take advantage of its spaces and resources.

Library & Technology Development - Digital Scholarship Center

Charles Library / Scholar’s Studio planning

New library space policies

Acquire makerspace equipment

Library & Technology Development - MADS

Participate in the move from Paley to Charles Library, adjusting our cataloging and digitization workflows accordingly, but especially by continuing retrospective cataloging and metadata enrichment efforts, to ensure as many resources as possible have adequate descriptions before they are moved into an automatic storage and retrieval system and become inaccessible by physical browsing.

Library & Technology Development - Project Coordination*

Provide consistent and dependable technology to meet the computing and technological needs of the Temple community for use in the library.

Organizational Research & Strategy Alignment

Develop plan for assessment of space use in Charles Library, making sure that data gathering systems are in place to demonstrate use and value of new types of spaces

Outreach & Communication*

A major project of the next year will be continuing to get campus and neighbors acclimated to Charles Library. We have already developed one guide and will be developing another once we’re in the building. We are not sure what else we will do as part of this goal, and won’t know until we are in the building and determine needs. The Outreach & Communications Strategic Steering Team will likely have goals in this area, but they have not been set yet.

Press*

Take advantage of move to Charles to hold Faculty Editorial Board meetings, author meetings, and other conversations at the Press offices, providing a window into Press operations and the strengths of our publishing program.

Special Collections Research Center

Continue surveying, appraising, and planning for move to new building. Finalize locations for collections and collection types in new building.
