Research Data Services Strategic Steering Team: Key Activities and Accomplishments

 FY 19-20

  • Completed and rolled out a Data Skill Areas educational guide document for use by library staff to build on data skills.
  • Taught numerous workshops, such as using OSF to support open research, research data management skills, writing data management plans, using REDCap, and more.
  • Organized Love Data Week events at both HSL and Charles Library. Completed an overhaul of our Research Data libguide. Developed and tested a workflow for curating data deposits for TUScholarShare Continued to support and promote the DMPTool, including reviewing DMPs for researchers, updating our official guidance, and working with ITS and OVPR on promotion ideas.
  • Continued to run and promote our Data Grant program, receiving six submissions and working with a researcher to access social media data for free.
  • Continuing to support the OSF platform through workshops, consultations and outreach. Beginning a research project with Ithaka S+R to study how big data researchers work at Temple.

FY 18-19

  • Customized the DMPtool in collaboration with Information Technology Services to provide additional data management plan guidance and information on TU resources and policies. (RDS SST)
  • Established and promoted the new Library data grants program. Solicited and received applications for the first competition in fall 2018. (RDS SST, Acquisitions and Collection Development Dept, DSC)
  • Led the establishment of an Open Science Framework (OSF) team to conduct a campus-wide roll-out of the OSF. Developed a Temple landing page, engaged Information Technology Services to link policies on the OSF, offered introductory and pre-registration workshops at HSL and Paley libraries. (RDS SST, SC SST, HSL)
  • Helped develop policies and procedures for the Library’s new Institutional Repository, TUScholarShare to enhance data sharing and curation. (RDS SST, SC SST, LTS, MADS, Law library)
  • Provided new public workshops on research data skills and tools at the health sciences and main campuses.
  • Expanded Love Data Week to two weeks at HSL, developed workshops on new topics and engaged additional library and external instructors on main and health sciences campuses. (RDS SST, HSL, LRS, DSC)
  • Made significant progress on developing a Library staff data competency program. (RDS SST)
  • Began to develop content for new Research Data Services webpages for the new Library website. (RDS SST) ICPSR library representative Castello reported increased outreach and promotion to researchers about the repository and developed a library guide to the ICPSR. (LRS).
  • Completed report on interviews with health science researchers as part of the NNLM MAR pilot project to develop research data services in health science libraries. Shared the report with ADC and RDS SST. (HSL, Administration, RDS SST).
  • Began project to conduct Data Curation Profiles interviews with researchers to understand and support their research data practices. Met with one graduate student researcher and one researcher who runs a lab. Project still underway. (RDS SST).


FY 17-18

  • Established the Library Data Grants Program. Recruited ICPSR library representative to take on an enhanced role.
  • Completed preliminary work for Temple University on OSF for Institutions.
  • Completed interviews with health science researchers as part of the NNLM MAR pilot project on Research Data Services. (RDS SST, HSL)
  • Increased the number and variety of research data management (RDM) classes offered at main and HSL campuses,
  • including: workshops at the DSC; RDM 101 classes on both campuses; incorporating workshops led by external partners during Love Data week at HSL, (RDS SST, DSC, LRS, HSL)
  • Participated in multiple planning conversations for the institutional repository. (RDS SST, SC SST)
  • Wrote team charge for RDS SST.
  • Developed prioritized list of goals and objectives for RDS SST.
  • Developed Confluence presence for the RDS SST.
