Agenda

  • Overview - where do we currently stand with Elements and the IR?

    • Tested ways of using Elements to identify open access articles and deposit them into DSpace

    • Reached out to Symplectic Support for ways to identify OA articles (OA Monitor?)

      • They’ll provide access to a sandbox

  • Our current options:

    • 1 - We work with ITS to implement the method we have already tested for finding OA articles (very labor intensive) and receive admin permissions to the Elements production server to carry out this workflow. We do not get the OA Monitor, but keep the DSpace connector.

    • 2 - We get the OA Monitor and continue to pay for the DSpace connector (involves more money), and work more closely with ITS on additional initiatives like the IR.

    • 3 - If there is no campus participation in the Elements project, then it is not worthwhile for us to get the OA Monitor or continue to use the DSpace connector. We explore alternative OA tools that function like the OA Monitor, but are cheaper (e.g. CHORUS).

Notes

  • What is the long term status of Elements?

    • David: for a long time the plan has been to deposit through Elements.

    • More and more colleges are adopting Elements. However, it’s safe to say it won’t be heavily used by faculty. Everyone involved is satisfied that the maintenance of the system is an administrative task.

    • David: The fact that we’re not getting faculty input is somewhat of a deathblow to the ‘faculty deposit through Elements’ plan

  • Q: what are we left with in terms of ways to populate the repo en masse.

  • What is the Libraries' current role in the Elements project? And that of ITS?

  • What is our relationship with them? What do they expect of us, if anything at all?

  • What will the Libraries and IR’s roles look like if we are to continue using the Elements connector?

  • What features does our Elements subscription allow, in addition to the DSpace connector?

  • Can we test the OA Monitor tool and receive access to a “sandbox environment”?

    • Yes. And we should. Elements will give us a login and Alicia will test.

  • How do we go about receiving permission from ITS to retrieve this access?

  • Question: What could we still do with the metadata from Elements?

    • Metadata-only deposits aren’t possible.

    • One idea: a citation-only reference that leads to the location of the article as made available through our e-resources.

  • Long story short… unless the OA moniter is great, we won’t need the Repository Connector.

Next steps:

Gabe will contact Roz/Elements to set up a demo of the OA tool.

If Gabe/Annie/Alicia request it, David will initiate the process of connecting our Prod Elements to DSpace.

We’ll all brainstorm about how we can use Elements metadata.
