Diversity & Inclusion Committee: Charge

The Temple University Libraries & Temple University Press (TULUP) Diversity & Inclusion Committee is charged with:

  • mapping the trajectory of diversity and inclusion work over the next few years at TULUP;
  • exploring ways to promote and enhance the wellbeing of all our community members by establishing benchmarks and goals for greater diversity and inclusion in TULUP spaces, services, and resources;
  • participating as an advisory body on matters related to recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce, including staff and student workers;
  • providing leadership and guidance in shaping and implementing diversity education for the TULUP staff, in collaboration with members of the TULUP administrative team;
  • aligning library diversity and inclusion initiatives with the broader diversity and inclusion agenda of the institution;
  • establishing partnerships and joint programming with relevant groups on campus;
  • engaging with Programming and Events staff within TULUP to sustain our commitment to diversity and inclusion issues and contexts in our sponsored events series; and
  • sharing the activities and outcomes of the committee’s work with the TULUP staff and the broader university

Membership Terms

Composition of the committee should reflect a broad cross section of TULUP domains and should represent the full diversity of the TULUP staff. However, acknowledging that much of the invisible labor of educating colleagues about diversity already falls to members of marginalized groups, committee members will be selected based on their commitments to centering the voices of marginalized individuals, rather than their personal identities.

Committee appointments will be for one year following the fiscal year calendar from July 1 through June 30. Initial appointments during the spring of 2017 will take effect immediately up formal announcement and charging of the group and will conclude June 30, 2018.

To incorporate different perspectives in committee leadership, and to exemplify a spirit of cooperative engagement around diversity and inclusion issues, the group will operate with two co-chairs. For its initial year of operation, committee members and the committee co-chairs will be appointed by the Dean of Libraries. In subsequent years, the outgoing committee will meet and consult with the Dean of Libraries during the May to June time period regarding committee membership and co-chair assignments for the coming year.

Committee members may serve a second successive term to ensure continuity of operations, but no more than half of the committee membership from any given membership cycle can sustain participation in the following year. This practice is being adopted to ensure ongoing inclusion of new voices in the TULUP diversity & inclusion conversation.

The committee will liaise with Library administration by meeting once a quarter with the Director of Administration.

The committee can propose amendments to this charge to fine-tune the way it functions and selects new members moving forward.
