TULUP D&I Rationale

In 2017, the Temple University Libraries & University Press (TULUP) Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee was charged with mapping the trajectory of diversity and inclusion initiatives at TULUP.

Our full charge can be found on Confluence.

D&I Committee Goals

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee plans to collaborate with appropriate partners across our organization to achieve the following goals:

  1. Make the Temple University Libraries and University Press (TULUP) safe(r) spaces, both in our physical and online spaces.
  2. Create more opportunities for TULUP employment and leadership by members of marginalized groups, and create structures to support employee retention.
  3. Make diversity and inclusion an integral part of work culture at TULUP.
  4. Contribute to ongoing diversity efforts at Temple University.

Committee Appointments

Committee members will generally serve 2-year terms, with one-third of the committee rotating off annually. Three committee members serve continuously due to their job responsibilities. Committee members may serve a second successive term to ensure continuity of operations. This practice is being adopted to ensure ongoing inclusion of new voices in the TULUP diversity and inclusion conversation.

Any TULUP staff member is eligible to apply for service to this committee. Service on this committee involves committing considerable time and effort. Interested staff members should consult with their supervisors and, if necessary, seek their approval before applyingapplying. All applications will be reviewed by the current committee and new committee appointments will be made by the committee chairs.

Because of the important role of the committee in representing the perspective of TULUP, high priority for appointments is given to applications that may be the sole or participating representatives of as many departments represented as possible. In addition, maintaining a good professional/support staff ratio will be considered when determining appointments.

Committee appointments will be made in June for the term starting in the new fiscal year. Newly appointed members will be added to committee listservs lists at that time of onboarding, so that new members can prepare for their service in advance of their first committee meeting.

The committee will have a maximum of 9 members and 1 ex-officio member, based on their professional function and expertise.

Committee Member Expectations

  • Review all relevant material before committee meetings.
  • Co-creation of and accountability to group agreements governing discussion in meetings and overall collaborative work of the group. Example group agreements include:
    • Try to reach consensus.
    • Use “I” statements.

  • Share any University activities that affect or are affected by the committee's work.
  • Support the efforts of the committee chairs and carry out individual assignments made by the chairs.
  • Work as part of the committee and staff team to ensure that the committee's work and recommendations are in keeping with the TULUP and Temple mission and goals.
